Video: the Insane, 968HP Ferrari SF90 Hybrid Hypercar

968 HP Hybrid Electric Ferrari

When Ferrari released its first production hybrid, the Ferrari La Ferrari, the execs in charge of the Italian brand promised the purists that no Ferrari would even run on purely electric power. Well, times do seem to have changed, because this all-new Ferrari is more than just a battery-boosted, 900+ HP hypercar. It’s called the SF90, and it’s a battery-boosted, 900+ HP hypercar capable of running 15 miles on purely electric power.

As for the car, itself, the new SF90 makes use of Ferrari’s existing, 660HP 4.0 liter, twin-turbocharged V8 from the (relatively) more pedestrian 488 GTB. In the SF90, though, that engine’s output is combined with 3 high-torque electric motors and good for a combined 968HP. It’s both clever, and new. “The SF90 Stradale is the first ever Ferrari to feature PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) architecture which sees the internal combustion engine integrated with three electric motors,” explains the official Ferrari release. “Two of which are independent and located on the front axle, with the third at the rear between the engine and the gearbox … the SF90 Stradale is the first ever Ferrari to feature PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) architecture which sees the internal combustion engine integrated with three electric motors, two of which are independent and located on the front axle, with the third at the rear between the engine and the gearbox.”

That engine and electric motor combination isn’t the only part of the drivetrain that’s worth getting excited about, either. Again, from the press release, “The SF90 Stradale sports a completely redesigned 8-speed, oil-bath, dual-clutch transmission. New gear ratios and improved transmission efficiency yield a significant reduction in fuel consumption in urban and motorway driving (-8% in the WLTP cycle) without having to compromise on performance. In fact, there is even a 1% improvement in efficiency on the track.”

Best of all, that techno whizz-bang comes with better fuel economy and lower emissions than older legendary Ferraris like the original F40, too– which had to make do with less than half the horsepower of the new SF90. (!) Take a few minutes to watch it, then let us know what you think of this all-new hypercar in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
