Fonzarelli NKD – Electric Motorcycle from Down Under

The hottest segment in motorcycling right now isn’t big-bore adventure tourers or over-the-road sofas, it’s mini motos. Small, fun, agile, and lightweight motorcycles like the Honda Grom that don’t require too much investment and don’t themselves too seriously but still deliver in terms of fuel economy and practicality. Following close behind the growing popularity of these bikes, however, is the coming onslaught of electrics– but Australian EV builder Fonzarelli has beaten the big four to the punch with a new, fun, bite-sized electric motorcycle called the NKD. They’re billing it as, “Australia’s first locally designed, manufactured, and retail-ready emission-free motorbike,” and it perfectly captures a sort-of chunky, go-anywhere, urb...

Can Your Household Go Fully Electric?

If you’ve ever assumed that you “need” a gasoline powered car in your household for things an electric vehicle just can’t do, think again. Maybe you only have one car and wonder whether an electric would work for you. Or perhaps you’re already enjoying an electric vehicle but have a secondary vehicle, or spouse’s vehicle that relies on fossil fuels just in case. I’m here to tell you that for most of us, an electric vehicles meets all driving needs. The Federal Highway Administration publishes the average annual mileage that drivers drive per year by age. The aggregate amount (that is, both males and females) driven by both the 20-34 and 35-54 age groups is about 15,000 miles per year. A study done by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that...

Czech it Out: Classic Čezeta Reborn as an Electric Scooter!

The world of electric vehicles is getting bigger and bigger each day. As an EV enthusiast, that’s pretty exciting– only I’m not exactly an EV enthusiast. Or, maybe a better way of putting that is to say, “I’m not only an EV enthusiast.” I’m interested in almost all mechanical things, and I’m especially excited about weird mechanical things that were/are built in small volumes by clever people with an absolutely bonkers aesthetic. As all those things and (I like to think) more, I love the new Čezeta electric scooter. If you look at this bike and it seems a bit like an old, Cold War-era, communist government moped– well, that just means you’re paying attention. “The Čezeta started life in 1957 at the height of the space age,&#...

Curtiss Zeus is a Stunning, V8 Electric Motorcycle

If you haven’t heard of Curtiss Motorcycles before, get wise– because these guys are building custom electric motorcycles that are the spiritual successors to choppers and cafe racers, but with (what I’ll call) a greater respect for technology. They are every bit the real deal, and their latest blood, sweat, and gears-based proof of that fact is the bike you see here: Zeus. Curtiss Motorcycles has been working closely with Zero motorcycles to build this stunning machine and put it into limited production, and is currently taking $1000 deposits on the Zeus. The hope is that the bike’s unique styling and high-quality materials will help the company pursue its stated mission to “create sustainable, desirable, intergenerational, mean, clean, and green future-proof...

Komatsu eDumper is the World’s Largest EV

Kuhn Schweiz AG and Lithium Storage GmbH are the guys behind the massive, Hulk-green eDumper. They claimed their purpose-built electric truck would be the largest EV in the world when they first announced the project back in 2017. Well, it’s finally here– and the high-tech, 111 ton metal mammoth not only works as promised, but somehow looks even bigger than I remember! That “works as promised” part up there is a huge deal, by the way, because the eDumper isn’t just a big EV. It’s a big EV that actually powers the job site it’s operating at. It uses the truck’s massive batteries– two times larger than a Tesla sedan, by the way!– to power the empty truck up hill, then coasts back down with up to 60 tons of material in the bed. As it...

Volkswagen Secures EV Batteries Through 2023

Between its Volkswagen, Audi, and Seat brands, the Volkswagen Group has committed to building more than 300,000 electric vehicles in 2021. That’s a whole lot of electric cars from the company that, not too long ago, was touting the benefits of “clean diesel”. As such, you can imagine that some people doubted the company’s commitment ability to deliver. VW, though, claims they’ve locked down a battery supplier … for a full three years. “I can confirm that for the first years of our plan, a sufficient supply of cells has been contractually secured,” said Thomas Ulbrich, the Volkswagen brand management board member in charge of electric mobility. He also added that the contract would ensure this was the case until 2023 in a bid to remove all dou...

Retrotastic: Meet the Regent Electric Motorcycle

As far as motorcycles are concerned, the 70s are definitely coming back, from Honda’s new, neo-cafe styling school to Suzuki’s reborn Katana. The future, meanwhile, remains stubbornly electric. As such, it was only a matter of time before some enterprising young minds married that classic, UJM look to a more modern electric powertrain, right? Right– and it was Regent who seems to have got there first. Based in Sweden, Regent is hoping their bike’s clean, fuss-free, and classic UJM styling will help them become a sort of retro-Zero in Europe. They seem to be doing pretty well getting at it, too. As I write this, they’ve already pre-sold 78 of the 100 bikes they hope to build on their initial run, with articles on sites like this one and Electrek doing nothing t...
