With cars like the American Tesla Roadster and Coratian Rimac Two getting serious media attention, it might seem like Italy is losing its stranglehold on the exotic supercar market of the future. A collaborative joint-venture between a number of Italian automotive supply companies is hoping to bring the focus back to Italy with a beautiful, lightweight, and fast trackday special called the Spice-X SX-1. And, here’s the kicker: it’s designed to be affordable.

Official information is sparse, beyond these launch pictures. Still, Motor 1 Italy was able to get some more specific details out of its local sources. Check those out, below:

Aside from the minute size and single-seat capacity, the Spice-X is powered by two electric motors for both rear wheels. Both motors can produce 30 kilowatts (40 horsepower each), which allows the Spice-X to reach its maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour (99.4 miles per hour) or 210 kilometers per hour (130.4 miles per hour), depending on the version. Torque figures are at 160 Newton meter (118 pound feet) or 400 Newton meter (295 pound feet), which depends on the two battery pack options: 330 volts or 450 volts.

When I was working for Warren Mosler back in the ’90s, a company called US Electricar was taking Mosler’s Consulier GTP chassis and stuffing them full of electric motors. The car was a pioneer in EV performance, sure– but the memory that has stood out the most for me through all the years since wasn’t one from a racetrack. Rather, it was a sign in one of the offices that read. “Electric cars: go fast, go far, go cheap. (choose any two)” Twenty-odd years later, though, it seems like we can finally have our cake and eat it, too. I mean, relatively — because “less than a Ferrari” is still kind of pricey, you know?
