Originally presented as a heady design concept by automotive supply firm Schaeffler at Detroit and CES earlier this year, the BioHybrid electric-assisted pedal car looks like it might actually become a real thing. I say that because Schaeffler has gone and built one that actually works!

Even if you’re unfamiliar with Schaeffler, you’ve probably seen their work on electrified Ford Focuses (Focii?) and Skoda Scouts, but their main claim to high-level EV cred comes from their behind-the-scenes work on the race-winning Abt Formula E team.

Schaeffler isn’t talking about full production for the BioHybrid pedal car quite yet, but a fully-functional prototype was more than enough to net Paul Elio a few million dollars in investment money a few years ago (without anywhere near the R&D cred that Schaeffer has), and this one has the goods to take on the GEM as the dominant NEV in markets like Key West and Mackinac Island.

For starters, the BioHybrid seats two in a motorcycle-y 1+1 configuration, with a 25 MPH top speed and more than enough range to cover NEV duty- especially considering you could still pedal it home even if the battery did die out on you.

I might be biased, though, because I love both pedelec bikes and the idea of a grown up pedal car. What about you guys?
