VW Works to Preserve Civil Rights Legacy of Esau and Janie B. Jenkins

You may not know the story of Esau and Janie B. Jenkins. Being honest, I didn’t know that much about it before I started working on this article. The Jenkins’ were natives of South Carolina who were frustrated by the lack of opportunities and equal rights in their community, he bused his children and others to public schools in Charleston. Along the way, he started teaching his passengers to recite parts of the state constitution, one of the requirements for becoming registered voters in the 1940s, when only a few thousand African-American residents across South Carolina could vote, due to racial literacy exams. Those bus trips were just the start of a larger legacy, however. One that grew to include the 1966 VW Type 2 Bus you see here. Well, most of the 1966 VW Type 2 Bus, any...

The Green Pope: Francis and the Environment

In 2015, pope Francis penned Laudato Si, an encyclical (or formal letter) on the environment. This paper was subtitled, “On Care for Our Common Home” and was the most emphatic call yet for Roman Catholics to tackle issues related to planet Earth such as pollution and climate change. While previous popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI did accept the reality of human-caused climate change and considered it a moral issue for the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics, Pope Francis has made caring for the environment a central issue in his pontificate. This encyclical and several other statements made over the past few years have led some to refer to Francis as “the Green Pope.” When Laudato Si (which translates to “Praised Be”) was released, it was nothing shor...

French Gov’t Votes to Uphold 2040 Fossil Fuel Ban

The French government this week moved to turn their stated goal of making the country carbon-neutral by 2050 into law, in a move that will uphold a planned ban on the sale of fossil fuel-powered cars after 2040. “We have target for carbon neutrality by 2050, and we need a credible trajectory towards that, which includes a ban on the sale of vehicles that consume fossil fuels by 2040,” French Transport Minister, Elizabeth Borne, said on Tuesday. She believes the move will help the French auto industry switch to electric or hydrogen-electric vehicles. “Since the start of Emmanuel Macron’s term, our target is the climate plan that Nicolas Hulot announced in the summer of 2017. We will now inscribe this target into law.” The new “electric mobility law”...

Illinois Doubles Gas Tax, Cuts Proposed EV Fee Hikes

The State of Illinois recently passed some pretty serious measures to curb– or, at least, tax the snot out of– the proliferation of fossil fuel-burning vehicles. In addition to doubling the State’s gas tax, Illinois lawmakers have increased the cost of registering gas-powered cars by more than 50%. The change in fee prices follows a proposed hike in the cost of electric vehicle registration from $17.50 to $1000 (yeah, that says “one thousand US/American dollars”). The justification of the proposed hike was that, since gas taxes fund road maintenance and EV owners don’t buy gas, EV drivers weren’t paying their fair share of escalating infrastructure costs. In something of an about-face on the matter, Illinois put that burden even more squarely on ga...

Ford’s Self-Driving Business Development is Headed to Washington

Ford is pushing hard to build a self-driving mobility business within itself. It makes sense for them, as the company has been a textbook example of vertical integration for decades. Still, it’s going to take more than product development, manufacturing expertise, and a national dealer network to ensure that Ford is successful in its new venture. It’s going to take some politicians, too, which why Ford plans to be the first company to test its autonomous vehicles in Washington, D.C. Steve Hanley Explains the Federal EV Tax Credit

Regular readers of Gas 2 are, no doubt, familiar with Steve Hanley. He’s an avid enthusiast, long time absorber of automotive knowledge, and– of late– an incredibly knowledgeable clean tech guy. Steve has shifted his focus from Gas 2 to its bigger, badder, and more profitable sister site, Cleantechnica, but he still generates a ton of great content that’s worth sharing here, too. To that end, I present the following article summarizing the current state of the US Federal EV tax credit. Read it through, then let us know what you think of Steve’s take on the matter– and Elon Musk’s gamesmanship, if that’s what it is!– in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!   The Federal EV Tax Credit And You — CleanTechnica Explain...

New Policies Expected to Boost EV Sales in Sweden

The Swedish government has just proposed a new taxation scheme on light vehicles to go into place on the first of July, 2018. Regular petrol vehicles will receive increased taxation and plug-in vehicles will receive an increased bonus under the new scheme. The following is a translated segment of the government announcement about the changes: “The government proposes a bonus-malus system for new light vehicles, with effect from 1 July 2018. The main motive is to increase the proportion of environmentally adapted vehicles with lower CO2 emissions. The bonus-malus system here can complement the more generally active fuel taxes and help reduce the transport sector’s oil dependence and climate impact. “For petrol and diesel vehicles, an increased vehicle tax (malus) will be charged in the firs...
