Formula 1 star Fernando Alonso added another major win to his resume this past weekend by winning the prestigious Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona for the Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac team. It was a wet and wild Rolex 24, too– and Alonso proved his worth again by taking the wheel with the car in P8, then slicing through the field and pulling a 16 second lead over the 2nd place Whelen entry before the race was called for rain with just two hours to go.
Hilariously (or, ominously, if you have to race against him in the future), Alonso began suggesting the race be red-flagged for rain while he was still in second place. Imagine having another driver pass you, then pull out a 16 second lead while he’s being careful!
Further back, the LMP2 class was won by another ex-F1 driver, Pastor Maldonado, while the Daytona Prototype Team Penske Acura team– led by drivers Juan Pablo Montoya, Dane Cameron, and Simon Pagenaud– still feels like they had a shot at victory in the dry. Meanwhile, the super-sexy Mazda entry caught on fire … which, for the troubled Mazda team, feels like par for the course.
You can check out the full results for the Rolex 24, below, which includes both overall and class standings
