I’m not gonna lie, Genuine’s Buddy line of small-displacement scooters have a special place in my heart. Over the past twelve months, I spent (quite literally) hundreds of hours riding various scoots, from Honda Metros to big-engined maxis, and the Buddy was always “just right”. It’s a “Goldilocks” bike, in other words … and now, thanks to Ferrara Pan and the introduction of this new Lemonhead model, the lil’ Buddys have gotten a lil’ bit sweeter.

It’s All About The Bag

The 2013 Genuine Lemonhead is packing the same tried-and-true, 50-state legal, 49 cc 2-stroke engine as all Buddys have since 2007. There is also plenty of room under the seat for a 3/4 face helmet and one or two plastic grocery bags, which is nice. Still, the real draw here isn’t the practicality of a zippy, 100 mpg, traffic-carving fashion scoot. It’s isn’t the limited-edition, 200-run exclusivity of the thing, either. It’s not even the kick-ass graphics, Lemonhead instrument cluster, or bright yellow seat and wheel combination, either. It’s this:

That, kids, is an authentic Lemonheads metal lunchbox, and every Lemonhead Buddy comes with one. As far as I’m concerned, you can love the bike or leave it … but if you don’t want one of those lunchboxes, you’re a bad person.

Sweet, But Sour.

Bad person or saint, however, it must be said that there is some “sour” to this Lemonhead. For starters, there are only 200 of them, so either prepare pay premium (for a 50cc scooter) dollars OR pray that it’s a showroom flop for Genuine and try to pick one up in December for a song. In addition, the Lemonhead is only available as a 50 cc model, so it’s restricted from the factory to a top speed of just 30 mph. Sure, the Lemonhead’s top speed that can easily be bumped to 40-42 mph, but it’s a hassle many buyers won’t tolerate, no matter how cute the lunchbox is.

That’s OK, though … they’re bad people, and you can only expect so much from bad people.
