Arnold and EVs: Has the Terminator Gone Green?

Arnold and EVs: Has the Terminator Gone Green?

What words pop in your head when you think of Arnold Schwarzenegger? Terminator? Commando? Governor? How about environmental activist and all-electric vehicle (EV) enthusiast? Impossible you say, the man owns four full-size Hummers for crying out loud! While this may be true, Arnold appears to be re-inventing himself as hero of all things EV.

Schwarzenegger made headlines in June of this year when he starred in a hilarious add for Veloz, a non-profit aiming to promote EV sales and production. According to the company’s website: “‘Veloz is a nonprofit organisation made up of a high-powered, diverse board and members from key sector companies, agencies and nonprofits. With unparalleled stakeholder leadership, Veloz is uniquely able to accelerate the shift to electric cars through public-private collaboration, public engagement and policy education innovation.”

You can watch the ad here:

“We chose humor—not fear or fury like some people—because negative emotions are burning people out,” said Schwarzenegger about the ad. “Humor, on the other hand, lights people up. Besides, we figure the world could use a little laughter just about now.” You can say that again sir!

While it may come as a shock to some that Arnold has become an EV warrior, he has always been a champion of the environment. While serving as Governor of California, Schwarzenegger signed multiple bills aimed to protect the environment into law. As Founder and Chairman of the University of Southern California’s Schwarzenegger Institute, he has championed environmental issues from climate change to clean air. The Terminator’s professional record on environmental issues has always been and continues to be, superb.

This isn’t the first time Schwarzenegger has made headlines for promoting EVs. In January of 2017, Arnold teamed up with Austria’s Kreisel Electric to convert his Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen into an EV. The conversion involved ditching the gas-powered engine and replacing it with several battery packs capable of generating 360 kW of power. The car was able to go from 0 to 60 mph in only 5.6 seconds after the modifications.

“This amazing off-road vehicle as a clean and fast electric car? A dream has become real!” Schwarzenegger told reporters after the car was finished.

Here’s Arnold showing it off to his social media followers:

BUT HE STILL OWNS FOUR HUMMERS!!! This is true but…at least one of them has been made into an EV. In June of 2017, Arnold once again teamed up with Kreisel to electrify his fire-truck red H1.

“Finally my dream of turning my Hummer fully electric is a reality. We are moving so quickly toward a clean energy future,” Schwarzenegger told reporters after the conversion.

Like the G-Wagen, the converted H1 features battery packs capable of generating 360 kW of power. The vehicle features two electric motors on the front and back axles and can reach speeds of up to 75 mph. Kreisel did not specify what the acceleration rates were for the new electric H1.
