As much as we may hate to admit it, celebrities are interesting. Whether they be stars of stage, screen, or sport, celebs are often at the forefront of the national discourse surrounding politics and culture.
While we may not always agree with their positions, we can recognize and appreciate it when celebrities make positive contributions to society. To show our appreciation for purchasing all-electric vehicles (EVs), we would like to thank these ten celebs who have gone green.
1. Jay Leno
In addition to owning about a billion other cars, this former Tonight Show host is the proud owner of a Tesla Model S. In a recent interview on CNBC, Leno explained to the host why he loves his car.
“I have a Tesla. I’ve had it for three years. I’ve never done anything. There’s no fluids to change. There’s nothing. For new technology to succeed, it can’t be equal,” he said. “It’s got to be better and [Tesla] sort of solved the battery problem. It can go 350 to 400 miles at a charge. There’s no maintenance. They’re faster than the gas car. So there’s almost no reason to have a gas car unless you’re doing long-haul duty,” Leno explained.
We agree with you Jay!
2. Leonardo DiCaprio
While I realize that he has starred in several other films, The Departed is by far my favorite DiCaprio flick. Leonardo’s portrayal of a tough Boston cop in the film is superb. In addition to being an excellent actor, DiCaprio is also a champion of the environment. In a speech to the United Nations in 2014, DiCaprio was quoted as saying, “We only get one planet. Humankind must become accountable on a massive scale for the wanton destruction of our collective home. Protecting our future on this planet depends on the conscious evolution of our species.”
In addition to being one of the first purchasers of the Toyota Prius, he’s also been seen around town in a Fisker Karma and a Tesla Roadster. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is.
3. Penn Jillette
I don’t have a whole lot in common with Penn Jillette. I’m short and skinny, he’s tall and fat. He’s funny and can do magic while I have a terrible sense of humor and really no skills to speak of. That being said, there is one thing that Mr. Jillette and I do have in common: we both own a 2012 Nissan Leaf! I applaud him for his excellent taste in vehicles.
4. Alyson Hannigan
Best known for her roles in the American Pie movies and the hit series How I Met Your Mother, Alyson Hannigan is one of Hollywood’s most popular actresses. In addition to fame and good looks, it turns out she also cares about the environment and has demonstrated this fact by purchasing a Tesla Model S. A wonderful choice in my opinion!
5. Aaron Donald
We mentioned Mr. Donald here in our list of sports stars that own EVs. I think that this defensive tackle’s recent purchase of a Karma Revero was so cool, it needs to be mentioned again. Thank you for promoting electric vehicle ownership and I hope you enjoy your new car sir!
6. Usain Bolt
You may know him as the world’s fastest man but did you know that Usain Bolt is also an electric vehicle enthusiast? In addition to launching his own line of electric scooters in Paris earlier this year, Bolt recently announced that his company would be debuting a line of small electric cars designed for urban use. These “micro-cars” will offer seating for two and sell for under $10,000.
“Through its portfolio of micromobility products, Bolt Mobility fulfills the dream that many of us share to operate in a world where our vehicles will fit perfectly into the fabric of our urban environments while respecting the air we breathe,” said Bolt in a statement after the announcement. We wish Usain much luck with his new endeavors.
7. Lionel Richie
Hello? Is it an EV you’re looking for? Okay that was bad. I told you I had no sense of humor or really any talent to speak of. Unlike me, Lionel Richie is one of the world’s greatest singers and songwriters. As it turns out, he also drives a Tesla Model S. With a range of up to 335 miles on a single charge, he can even drive it all night long…
8. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
As we mentioned here, Pope Francis is often referred to as “The Green Pope” for his championing of environmental issues. It turns out his predecessor was no slouch either. In a letter to to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in 2007, then Pope Benedict XVI wrote, “Preservation of the environment, promotion of sustainable development and particular attention to climate change are matters of grave concern for the entire human family.” In 2012 he became the first Supreme Pontiff to roll around Vatican City in an EV, a white Renault Kangaroo to be exact. How cool is that?
9. Juan Pablo Montoya
His fans know him simply as JPM. In an impressive career that has spanned three decades, NASCAR legend Juan Pablo Montoya has thrilled audiences with his incredible driving prowess. When he’s not zooming around the track winning races, he can be seen cruising the streets of Miami in his Tesla Model S. Let’s hope he keeps it under 200.
10. Rowan Atkinson
Who would have guessed that Mr. Bean is also Mr. Green? In addition to owning an Aston Martin DB2, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, and a Jaguar Mk7, Britain’s best-known comedian has been seen driving the Streets of London in his BMW I3 EV. We applaud his efforts to promote electric vehicle technology.
What do our readers think about this list of green celebs? Are there any others that you feel should have made the list? What effect do you think celebrity endorsements have on convincing people that EVs are the way to go? Do people really go out and buy products like EVs because their favorite celeb drives one or have we become numb to this type of influence?
